As much as Jaselyn loves the rush of offshore fishing, sometimes it’s nice to switch things up. That’s exactly what she did when Toby, Jaselyn, and Peewee decided to spend a day fishing inshore in Hackberry, Louisiana. It was a break from the deep blue, trading the vast open water for the winding marshes and calmer waters of Lake Calcasieu. Their target? Speckled trout.
The trip started with a bang—literally. A brutal early-morning storm rolled through, shaking the camp so hard that it jolted everyone awake. The wind howled, rain pounded, and at one point, the door even blew open. For a few moments, they questioned whether they’d even get out on the water that day. But just as quickly as the storm came, it passed, leaving behind a glassy Lake Calcasieu and an unexpected cool breeze. The day was back on, and they were fortunate to have a great charter captain from Let’s Geaux Charters guiding them through the best fishing spots.
Navigating through the little canal to reach Lake Calcasieu, they settled into their spots, rods in hand, ready to test their luck. The bite wasn’t exactly on fire—they landed about ten specks, which is on the slower side for a day of inshore fishing. But what they lacked in quantity, they made up for in quality. Every fish they reeled in was solid, thanks in part to the expertise and local knowledge of their charter captain, each one a reminder of why speckled trout are such a prized catch in these waters.
This trip was special for more than just the change of scenery. Peewee was with them, a rare occasion since he tends to get sea sick offshore. Being able to fish with him, to share something that Toby and Jaselyn love in a place that kept him comfortable, was an experience they wouldn’t forget. Watching him enjoy the day, casting lines and laughing with them, made every moment out there even better.
By the time they wrapped up, the sun had left its mark—literally. They all walked away with a little sunburn, a sign of a good day spent outdoors. It wasn’t the most action-packed trip, but sometimes, fishing isn’t just about the catch. It’s about the company, the experience, and the memories made along the way. And on this trip, they had plenty of those.
